Richard Allen Fagerstrom died peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones. Dick was born in Jamestown, NY, on June 2, 1937, the son of Ebert and Grace Fagerstrom. His family moved to Oakland, CA, in 1948, and he graduated from Oakland High School in 1955. After graduating from San Francisco State College in 1963 and earning his Secondary Teaching Credential the following year, he spent 34 years teaching at College Park High School in Pleasant Hill, where he became the Social Science Department Chairperson and taught Honors Government. In honor of his years of service, his family is funding the Richard Fagerstrom Memorial Scholarship for Outstanding Achievement in Government at College Park.
A man of many interests and hobbies, he loved good company, good food and good wine. Dedicated to his family, he loved coaching youth sports and family vacations on the Oregon coast. He was an avid Forty Niner fan and enthusiastic theater patron. After retirement, he and his wife travelled extensively, and he enjoyed painting watercolors of the sites they visited. He was funny and smart and had a very big heart.
Dick is survived by Linda (Loomis), his loving wife of 53 years, their daughter Kristen Johnston, son and daughter-in-law Derek Fagerstrom and Lauren Smith, and grandchildren Mikey Johnston and Arrow and Audrey Fagerstrom.
A celebration of Dick's life will be held in April for close family and friends. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice .
